SDG 17

20 November, 14:00-18:00
Academic Council Hall

Session

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the tasks for their implementation are conceptually aligned with the primary objectives of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) defined at the stage of its establishment. According to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it is necessary to combine economic growth with solving key social and environmental problems, including: developing education and healthcare systems; improving social protection for the population; promoting employment; protecting the environment.

The CIS Charter also enshrines the promotion of the comprehensive and balanced economic and social development of its member states as one of its main goals. This involves forming a common economic space by developing interstate cooperation and integration processes. The activities of the Commonwealth of Independent States are conceptually aligned with the global Sustainable Development Goals, which helps to ensure stable socio-economic development of the region.

Purpose of the Session: the session will consider the interaction between the CIS countries in achieving the SDGs at the regional and global levels.

Figures and Facts

A comprehensive vision for the implementing the SDGs in the CIS is reflected in the Concept of Sustainable Development for the CIS Member States. The Concept emphasises that strengthening the civilizational community through natural cultural, historical and economic integration of peoples allows for the development of mutually beneficial cooperation between the CIS member states, as well as strengthening their competitiveness in the global economy and providing a basis for the unique cultural development of each state.

The remaining CIS countries are among the recipients of assistance. The Republic of Azerbaijan provides development assistance and it is also a recipient of assistance.
The GDP of the CIS member states grew by 3.8% in 2023, which is 1.1% higher than the global GDP growth.
Over the past four years, trade turnover in the CIS has increased by more than 2/3. In 2023, trade turnover in the CIS grew by 5.8%, it grew by 6.5% in the first quarter of this year.
In the first half of 2024, industrial production in the CIS as a whole amounted to 104.3% compared to the same period last year and commercial cargo transportation accounted for 104.9%
