Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development. Challenges or Opportunities in CIS Space

SDG 9 SDG 11

19 November, 10:00-15:00
Hall of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence

Session

The modern challenges of urbanisation, technological development and climate change require CIS member states to reconsider their approaches to infrastructure, industrialisation and urban planning. The goal of the session is to bring together researchers, managers and AI experts to develop sustainable solutions that incorporate the principles of SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.

The session participants will discuss the strategic and practical aspects of transitioning to an innovative economy, building an environmentally friendly and sustainable urban environment, as well as the role of digital and artificial intelligence technologies in this process. The focus will be on the specifics of the CIS countries: from modernisation of post-industrial territories to digital transformation of municipal governance.

The session will focus on exchanging best practices, scientific approaches and applied solutions, including smart cities, sustainable transport infrastructure, energy-saving technologies, adaptive urban design, as well as the synergy between management and AI in sustainable development. Scientific and educational cooperation in this area is seen as the key to long-term regional progress.

Figures and Facts

Infrastructure deficit. In the CIS countries, infrastructure investment lags behind global needs by more than 3% of GDP annually, hindering their industrial development.
Urbanisation level. According to the UN, over 70% of the CIS population will live in cities by 2050. Many of these cities suffer from network congestion, ineffective management and environmental problems.
Innovation index. Most CIS countries are ranked in the middle or lower regions of the Global Innovation Index, indicating the need for investment in science, R&D and technological entrepreneurship.
Climate risks. According to the World Bank, climate extremes in large cities of the CIS countries cause billions of dollars’ worth of damage annually, which requires a rethink of urban sustainability.
Digital gap. Despite growing digitalisation, uneven access to digital infrastructure in the CIS regions hinders the development of smart solutions for city and industrial management.
