New Agro-Biotechnologies for Food Security

SDG 2

19 November, 15:00–18:00
Hall 1

Session

It is now clear that the world will not be able to achieve the Zero Hunger goal by 2030.

According to experts, 582 million people are expected to suffer from chronic malnutrition by the end of the decade. The latest UN report highlights an expected increase in hunger in 22 countries and regions. The spread of conflicts, especially in the Middle East, combined with climatic and economic factors, puts millions of people in an extremely difficult situation. Meanwhile, La Niña weather phenomenon poses an additional risk, as it could exacerbate climate change in the coming months and further threaten the food systems of vulnerable regions. In addition to dealing with the issue of eliminating acute hunger, humanity faces the problem of providing a complete balanced diet necessary for a healthy and fulfilling life. To ensure food security, modern fertility-enhancing technologies must be widely used, crop areas must be expanded by introducing drought- and frost-resistant crops, mineral fertilisers must be applied in small batches, protective measures must be implemented in a timely manner, and biological protection products must be developed and implemented.

Questions for discussion

  • Identifying problems and solutions to ensure food security in the CIS countries.
  • The role of biological products in greening agricultural production.
  • Prospects for creating plant varieties which are resistant to extreme weather conditions.
  • Problems of providing the population with healthy and functional food products.
